Artist - Jonathan Shepherd

I was born in Derbyshire in 1961 and continue to live high up in Matlock Bath with glorious views over the surrounding countryside. After leaving school at 16 I served an apprenticeship as a plumber before joining my father in a picture framing business (PEAKLAND ARTS). It was during this time that my interest in painting was kindled and I taught myself to paint, initially in acrylics and watercolours but now mainly in oils.

In 1991 I took over the framing business from my father and continue to run it to this day, although a lot more time is spent painting now. I have won several painting competitions including the Derbyshire Pro Loco Painting competition final which is a culmination of paintings done in various villages throughout Derbyshire which all have to be finished on the day and are then voted for by the public.

After several exhibitions my work is in collections in the USA , Australia and Europe as well as the UK. I mainly paint landscapes of Derbyshire and other rural areas of the UK but of late has been experimenting with other subjects and painting styles.

Artists - Tina Warren

I always had a natural ability for drawing and painting and started out as a mural artist when my children were young and then began to take on private and commercial commissions including portraiture.

Artist - Jill Tilsbury

Hi! I'm Jill, although most people call me Jilly - except when I'm in trouble - then it's Jillian!

I have been drawing and painting for as long as I can remember.

My earliest memory of painting is quite a special one. It was my first day at school and my Dad had taken me as he was recovering from knee surgery and the walk was good exercise.

As we walked he was telling me that I would love school, meet new friends and learn new things; I'm not sure whether he was trying to give me comfort or himself.

We passed so many crying youngsters and distraught parents, when we got to the classroom I spied a table set out with paints, paper, brushes and water. I sat right down and started to paint and my Dad went home in tears. We both smile when we remember that day and 40 years on I'm still painting!

I love painting any sort of animal although my favourite woud be the cat family from domestic to wild. My goal is realism and I love the challenge of recreating the detail.

Artist - Maya Meritay

Maya Meritay is a surreal painter; reconstructor of ancient art; facial-reconstruction of mummies.

Since early childhood her passion has been surrealism and ancient egypt. She worked as a Media Designer and PR- Assistent for 25 years. Big changes in personal life meant that she had to get rid of the old job and start over again. Many of the changes in in her life are processed in her surreal paintings.

Artist - Martin Davis

I was born and brought up in a coal mining village in Derbyshire UK in the 1950’s and 60’s and developed a love of art from an early age. 

After University in Birmingham,UK from 1973-76 I joined the fire & rescue service... a career I completed 30+ yrs later in 2007. 

A means of escapism in childhood art has since been a passion I've carried with me ever since, throughout the 1970’s as an undergraduate and into adult life in the emergency services.

I only turned fully to painting from 2008 after I left the fire service and found time to devote to it.

About my art

There is a feeling of immediacy, of life, of connectedness, with painting that I don't get from anything else..... anything at all.  So I have to paint. My only regret is that I have neglected it for so long.

I am principally inspired by colour, and light & atmosphere. I paint mainly in oils because I love its texture. But I do experiment with other media..... and I do have a pretty eclectic kind of approach to subject matter.

I consider myself to be a modern traditionalist painter.  I don’t have any favourite subject matter, instead my imagination is fired by a certain indefinable quality in everyday things, often linked to a memory from the past.  Sometimes just part of a remembered image-even something simple like the sunlight playing on a hat brim-is all it takes. There is a kind of beauty inside everything if you look close enough – it doesn’t have to be anything intrinsically pretty, or attractive or especially worthy of attention.  In my experience quite often it is better if it isn’t.

I have always felt that a piece of the artist goes into everything he/she creates, so I endeavour to make each artwork absolutely unique. Like most artists, I suspect in their heart of hearts, I don't paint primarily to sell, so prices for my work are always reasonable. My goal isn't really to sell art at all, although I am extremely happy when someone wants to acquire a piece. My greatest hope is that my art will "touch" them personally.

I still want to exhibit my work......but it's not why I paint, it never was. Painting for me just calms the soul. It's my private world.

Education

Although I am a self taught artist with no formal training beyond school I have painted all my adult life. I still consider myself a student practicing my art, probably I always will. 

In 2010 I was shortlisted for the Art of Giving, National Art Competition at the Saatchi Gallery, London.

Artist - Garth Bayley

I love to work loosely and with bright colours drawing from life and keeping the sense of place or person while drawing on abstract ideas. I love the addition of man made objects in a landscape and this is starting to be a theme after moving to North West Cambridgeshire, gaining inspiration from long walks and drives (Road Trip series). I work with snapshots often incorporating different views to give the feel of the landscape.

My other passion is the use of the human form especially the male physique and the use of lighting and movement. I often get my ideas from press cuttings for plays and the theatre. I like to capture the essence of movement often without giving exact form but rather an impression of the figures. Often the dilemma is when to stop painting and not over paint the details.
